How to block OneDrive from Office 2016 as well as Office 365 applications?

Office 365 Pro-plus includes the new Office 2016 apps for your PC and Mac. Office 2016 is actually one of the version of the Office productivity suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc) and can be accessed through desktop. On the other hand, Office 365 Pro Plus is a cloud-based subscription which includes Office 2016.

So in this article, you will learn about the use of Group Policy settings to block the access to OneDrive from within the Office app. Here, are the steps to block OneDrive access for Office setup 2016 users in your organization-

  1. Download the Office 2016 Administrative Template files (ADMX/ ADML) and Office Customization Tool.
  2. To configure Group Policy settings, use the Office 2016 Administrative Templates-
  • Under ‘User configuration’.
  • Select the ‘Administrative templates’.
  • Click on the ‘Microsoft Office 2016’

Note– For downloading the Office product you need to visit Office.com/setup link.

To set the ‘show OneDrive sign-in’ settings to ‘disable’ and to enable the ‘Blocking signing into Office’ setting then set it to ‘Org ID only’.

If you wish to disable the OneDrive for Office 365 business then you need to follow certain steps as shown below-

1.Hide One Drive for Business from Apps Launcher.

You need to hide One Drive for Business App from the Apps launcher by changing the app visibility settings from the SharePoint online administration site.

2.Disable One Drive for Business in the Office Setup 365 tenant.

OneDrive for Business in Office 365 is still using the SharePoint Online as a back-end and SharePoint Online MySites infrastructure for the documentary library.

From the ‘User Profiles’ tab, one can remove the personal sites creation permission for the specific users or groups of users. This eventually disables future personal sites creation ability of the users.
